Seiichiro Matsumura’s Sound Art Installations at FASS Art Gallery

Sabancı University FASS Art Gallery presents two sound art installations by Japanese composer and sound artist Seiichiro Matsumura. Opening on March 10th, this exhibition explores digital soundscapes and interactive audio experiences.
Seiichiro Matsumura is a composer, sound and interaction designer, and Professor of the School of Design, Tokyo University of Technology in Japan. Matsumura’s work has been exhibited internationally, receiving honors at the Japan Media Arts Festival and the Asia Digital Art Grand Prix. He has also published books on sound programming, including Pd Recipe Book and Sound Design with Max.
Exhibited Works
Drizzle of Cicada This installation simulates cicada chirping using PureData (Pd). Up to twenty synthesized cicada sound units create an immersive wave of sound, played through four multi-phonic speakers. The piece explores cicadas as "organic synthesizers," highlighting cultural perceptions of sound—musical in Japan, noise in the West. Supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number 23K11732.
Your Angelic Voice - Ambient Expansion This interactive installation transforms visitors' voices into ethereal ambient sounds. A one-second voice recording is processed using granular synthesis, pitch shifting, and dynamic delay effects. As the sound evolves into a floating “angelic” tone, participants can re-record to continuously reshape their auditory experience.
